Yesterday’s news that The Obsessed (and former Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, etc.) frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich” was pulling out of his scheduled performance at Psycho Las Vegas due to mask mandates — via a rambling statement peppered with all manner of Covid-19 hoax conspiracy theories — came as a bit of a shocker to those of us who hold the doom legend in high regard.
But perhaps it shouldn’t have been so surprising.
A couple of weeks ago, Wino took to his personal Instagram account to promote The Obsessed’s show on August 6 at Division Brewery in Arlington, TX, as he’d been doing for several shows on the band’s in-progress tour. What started as a plug for the show and the band’s namesake beer quickly devolved into a missive in which Wino spouted several conspiracy theories and common conservative talking points in one fell swoop, including 1) a paean to Texas’s “fair and sane” laws and “real patriotism,” 2) an accusation that “big ugly” (the government) is behind intentional weather modification, 3) unspecified “voting fraud,” and 4) a shot at “socialist unelected swine,” likely in reference to President Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in November, 2020, who I shouldn’t have to tell you a) is not even close to socialist, and b) was elected quite fairly.
If you’re wondering what the fuck Wino means by “weather modification,” we’ll get there in a minute. No, he’s not talking about global warming.
First, here’s his full post:
“Division brewery has made a brew for our show tonight in Arlington TEXAS!!!! I love TEXAS and am very happy to be back in the land of the free. State pride , FAIR AND SANE LAWS , and REAL PATRIOTISM are just two of the many reasons why this state rules . Big ugly will try to undermine this state with weather modification, voting fraud and diluting the core with socialist unelected swine, BUT THEY WILL NEVER SUCCEED. Cmon Arlington Texas !!! Tonight The Obsessed and the Skull plus more ! Lets fukkin see you!!!”
The beer pictured in the post, mind you, is Skull Obsessed, a collaboration between Wino’s band and The Skull. The two groups were on tour together until The Skull’s frontman, Eric Wagner (ex-Trouble), ended up fighting for his life in the ICU with Covid-19. And still, Wino refuses to wear a mask… but that was yesterday’s post.
Now, about that “weather modification” claim. Wino would go on to say, in replies to comments on the above post, that he believes that recent floods in Texas, as well as the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2011, were intentionally caused by the U.S. government using sophisticated radio beams.
You read that correctly. You can learn more about that particular conspiracy theory right here if you desire.
Here’s Wino’s comment:
And here I was believing in scientifically proven phenomena like global warming, studied rigorously by thousands of scientists for decades. But it turns out the whole time all I had to do was “dig deep man” and I’d have discovered the truth on my own through some simple Googling! Shit, I really feel like a fool now.
Wino’s second comment above (in response to @horzh), is a reply to a comment that “meth is a hell of a drug,” presumably a reference to Wino’s 2014 deportation from Norway for possessing 11 grams of methamphetamine while on tour. So, yes, I’m guessing @horzh was in fact insinuating that Wino does meth! But don’t worry, the good old “let’s discuss this face to face” comment — sure to actually happen! and a common refrain from Wino — solved that dispute well and good.
Wino continued responding to people astounded at the absurdity of his post, talking shit to fans, seemingly completely oblivious to the “ok boomer” meme, and somehow, incomprehensibly, completely unaware of who Jon Schaffer is:
And that’s just the start of it. We’re not sure quite deep or how far back Wino’s beliefs go, but it seems likely he’s felt this way for a while but is only just now feeling confident expressing his viewpoints publicly. Either that or he’s been spouting off this nonsense forever and we just didn’t see it; also possible.
Chime in with your thoughts in the comments below… or, do like Wino would, and discuss things face to face like real men.
